PicoSure Tattoo Removal Q&A

What is PicoSure?

For years Q-switched lasers were a mainstay for tattoo removal, and they’re still efficient at reducing the appearance of tattoos. However, PicoSure® is an advanced laser technology that delivers pulses of energy at a faster speed than ever before.

While Q-switched lasers deliver energy in nanoseconds, PicoSure emits laser energy in picoseconds. As a result, PicoSure removes ink more thoroughly and in a shorter time frame.*

How does PicoSure work?

Like all laser technology, PicoSure breaks up tattoo pigment so that your body eliminates it naturally. However, the ultra-rapid speed of the PicoSure laser breaks ink into much smaller particles than other forms of laser tattoo removal. This enables your body to better clear tattoo pigment from your body, which makes for better results in fewer treatments.

The settings of the laser influence how the tattoo removal process feels and your provider makes every effort to keep you comfortable throughout the process. The appropriate laser settings depend on various factors, including the ink type, and the color and size of your tattoo.

Where the tattoo is located on your body also impacts the tattoo removal experience. Areas that have more nerve endings typically feel more sensitive. In general, most patients handle the tattoo removal process well and describe it as feeling like the sting of a rubber band.

How many treatments are required?

Tattoos respond differently to laser treatment depending on the size, color and ink type. Some colors are easier for the body to remove, such as black. Other pigments, like red, may require more sessions than easy-to-remove pigments. Depending on the color of your tattoo, you can expect to have as few as three or as many as five treatments to achieve the desired results.

The amount of time it takes to see results varies. After PicoSure breaks the tattoo pigment into tiny fragments, it takes about four to six weeks for your body to remove ink particles, so you may notice a major difference in that time frame.
