Laser Hair Removal Q&A
How does laser treatment remove hair?
The providers at Saratoga Family Medicine use both the Icon™ Aesthetic System and the Gentle Pro Series from Candella® for laser hair removal. These laser devices emit a concentrated beam of heat energy that damages hair follicles at the root, stunting their growth. Over the course of a series of treatments, hair growth decreases.*
The hair on your body grows in phases, with some hair follicles being in a resting phase while others are active. The laser energy used in the treatment is only effective on active hair follicles, thus multiple treatments are needed for optimal results.
For this reason, you may notice some regrowth in an area that has already been treated. Depending on how your hair responds to laser treatment, you may need at least three treatments to achieve the desired results. However, even when you have regrowth, the hair is usually lighter and finer. Keep in mind that the face, underarms, and bikini area typically respond faster to laser treatment than the legs.
What should I do before my treatment?
It’s important that you avoid disturbing or irritating your hair follicles prior to laser hair removal, so steer clear of waxing and electrolysis prior to treatment. Your provider may request that you prepare by shaving the area with a new razor the day before the procedure. This helps the laser penetrate the hair follicle.
Don’t use any lotions, cosmetics, or creams on the day of the procedure.
What can I expect during and after a session?
Most adults tolerate laser hair removal well. You may feel a small pricking sensation with each pulse of light as the laser penetrates your hair follicle. You may feel slightly more stinging in sensitive areas, such as the underarms and bikini region.
It’s also typical to experience some redness and slight irritation in the treated area. This should go away in a day or two. Laser hair removal can be repeated every three to six weeks, and you can expect to see results within a few months of starting treatment.
Am I a good candidate for laser hair removal?
Current laser hair removal technology targets the pigment of your hair follicle. Candidates with darker hair and lighter skin tend to see better results with fewer treatments. Certain lasers are designed to better remove hair from candidates with darker skin. Schedule a consultation to find out if you’re a good candidate for laser hair removal.
